Manipal is located in the west coast of India in the southern state of Karnataka 65km northwest of Mangalore. Only 15km from the Arabian Sea,
Manipal is situated on a laterite plateau about 12km above sea level. It overlooks a narrow coastal plain through which the picturesque
Swarna river meanders its way to the sea. Ideally situated amidst scenic beauty and rural surroundings, Manipal has all the modern facilities of transport, communication and banking.
Manipal, a university town, has a population of 20,000 of which 17,000 are students of the various Manipal Group institutions. On the 600 acre campus are colleges of medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, allied health sciences, engineering, management and hotel management. The campus landscape is dominated by the 1750 bed Kasturba Hospital where students have their clinical training. The climate is humid and warm between November and May and wet and cool during the monsoon months of June to October.
Manipal is accessible by road through national highway which connects Mumbai with Kochi (in Kerala State). The temple town of Udupi which houses a famous golden chariot is just 5km away and attractive beaches and holiday resorts are located within a radius of 100km. The nearest domestic airport is at Mangalore which is presently connected daily by air with Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore.
Udupi district has many temples. Famous ones are Krishna Temple in Udupi, Vinayaka Temple - Aneguddi ( 26 kms from udupi), Mukambika Temple - Kollur ( 59 kms from udupi, 26 kms from Kundapur), Vinayaka temple - Hattiyangadi ( 9 kms from Kundapur).
There are many famous beaches along Udupi district coast. Mainly, Kaup Beach, Malpe beach, Kodi beach, Maravanthe beach. St Mary's Island is around 10 Kms from Malpe, which is an excellent picnic spot.
Proximity to the Arabian Sea keeps the weather fairly stable throughout the year. Temperature ranges from 30 to 35 degrees centigrade during the day and is around 25 degrees at night. Humidity is normally high most of the time. The rainy season is from April to September.
